Resting Up In Port Augusta- Day 9

We sold up, packed up and decided to embark on the adventure of our lives. Follow us as we travel around Australia in a caravan.

There was a  huge change in the weather today. Yesterday hit a top of 34 degrees, today while mild, it was about 23 degrees. We are sitting outside after dinner at the moment with our thick jackets back on which I had to dig out of the “packed away” clothes.

This morning, after discovering there is absolutely no caravan repair service in Port Augusta, Chris retried his gas and his pipes seemed to be in perfect working order. Hmmmm… It seems there is a problem with the 240 volt heating element which can be surpassed by keeping it on gas instead of electricity. Lots of Googling later, he discovered a place to fix it in Alice Springs. The decision was made to rest here a day, improvise with the hot water and then continue heading towards Alice Springs.

Vicki and I started the day at 5:45 am walking for an hour into town and along the picturesque Harbour front. We saw a group of early morning workers struggling through their personal training session on the beach. We didn’t envy them at all. It made me think about the fact that today was the last day of the school holidays (weekday). I’m so glad to be adventuring, but yesterday I overheard 2 teachers in the Woolworths Supermarket talking about their Maths planners and I felt a sad kind of exclusion. It lasted for all of ummm… 2 minutes.

After our walk and showers I swept and mopped the floor of the van. It took entirely 4 minutes. Love it! Then I settled down to read and there I stayed. It was stuff dreams are made of. I did manage to put a load of washing on and then Ray brought it in because it just seemed like too much hard work and because he is so considerate. Love that man!

Vicki spent the day reorganizing their van, cleaning, washing and can you believe it, IRONING! Just watching her from the serenity of my chair was exhausting! I warned Ray and the boys that if they wanted anything flat and crease free they would need to put it under their mattress and sleep on it. They all agreed that they are fine with creases. I must mention that Chris did help Vicki. The hardest 7 minutes of his day apart from washing the car. Even in the outback the dust is getting to him.

We have declared Friday nights “egg night”. Just the same as at home. For us it means Ray’s favourite cuisine once a week and to make sure it is done just right, he cooks, Caleb doesn’t eat eggs and he’s happy with toast. Az skipped dinner tonight so it was easy all around.

Chris and Vicki had pasta. She has a much fussier husband than me although I think he will bend to the pressure sooner or later.

All in all, I had a marvellous day. A bit sad to be moving on tomorrow, but the good thing is I can continue to read in the car.

(Not many photos today. Reaching for the camera just seemed like too much hard work!)
