We sold up, packed up and decided to embark on the adventure of our lives. Follow us as we travel around Australia in a caravan.
We left Coober Pedy this morning, one day earlier than anticipated. We are all so eager to get to Uluru and feel that we had enough of the outback experience in Coober.
We had to wait til 9am to stock up at the IGA supermarket before hitting the road. We knew we were in for another long day and even though the kids are not enjoying the long days in the car, it is necessary to cover the expanse of land known as the Australian outback. We have a real appreciation of just how big Australia is. Today we drove for 5 hours. The landscape didn’t change and we didn’t reach any destination. This has been challenging for the kids. We have been telling them to focus on just how it makes them realize how big our country is. We just get met with the rolling of eyes.
We are stopped in a roadside free camping site for the night, right on the SA and NT border. It is funded and maintained by both Governments. The toilets are drop toilets and the ladies lock is a rock against the door. The hand washing facilities don’t work either. We tried to be thankful of somewhere to rest for the night for FREE but it was obvious this site is on the bottom of two maintenance lists. After dinner we relaxed while Ray took the kids inside the van for the next instalment of storytelling: Ray’s Box. Aaron discovered a wild cat who appeared friendly but we weren’t keen for him to encourage it to hang around and stay for dinner.
We met some people on their way to the Masters Games in Alice Springs. A lot of Grey Nomads travel the country both competing and volunteering and love to be a part of the community each year that participates in the Masters Games. Ray has been toying with the idea of competing since he discovered we will be there at the same time as the games. He has made enquiries and hopefully he will be able to compete in discus and perhaps shot put. Perhaps another medal to match his others that he achieved when we were at home?
