Big Balls In The Outback – Day 25

We sold up, packed up and decided to embark on the adventure of our lives. Follow us as we travel around Australia in a caravan.

Onwards towards Tennant Creek and beyond today. We knew it would be a huge day in the car, but very necessary to cover the kilometres to Darwin.

We stopped after 20 minutes travelling to explore the rock formations known as Devil’s Marbles. These sacred formations are the result of rain running into cracks in huge mountainous areas and over millions of years round rocks have been formed. We had a great time taking photos of us creating illusions of us holding up the rocks and Caleb and Hannah explored the caves while Ray built Harry a platform to stand on so he could hold up the rocks too. Caleb had so much fun he declared that he would like his next birthday party there!

We continued on and just before lunch stopped to fill up with gas at Renner Springs. We paid the most yet for LPG at $1.40 per litre. That’s for LPG, not petrol! Ray told the lady owner that she now had the record for being the most expensive of anywhere we had travelled, she went very red. The prices fluctuate so much that its obvious that high prices being charged are at the owners discretion. They forget that there is an army of travellers out here all keeping in touch via technology warning each other where not to buy fuel, which caravan parks not to stop in and even which towns to avoid. Word of mouth has never been so instantaneous or far reaching.

Not long after, we saw smoke in the distance and realised that we were heading towards it. As we got closer, we saw that it was a scrub fire on each side of the road and that we would have to drive right through it. It was fine and we were relieved that the flames weren’t bigger. We got some amazing photos to show for the heart thumping experience.

We travelled a total of 500kms today and pulled in at Daly Waters outback pub and caravan park. The charge was $12 a night which included a pool and individual showers and toilets. Not bad! We met a guy working there from France (yes a Frenchman) who has been travelling for 6 years around the world. He is doing it before he has a family because he says it is so hard to do it with kids. We all wholeheartedly agreed although they do add an element of fun and wonder to your travels too.

Tomorrow we are off to Mataranka Springs, the thermal pools renowned for their healing abilities.
