We sold up, packed up and decided to embark on the adventure of our lives. Follow us as we travel around Australia in a caravan.
We were up early to go and view the wildlife before the heat of the day set in and the pool started calling our names! The bird viewing facility at Mamukala gave us the opportunity to see early morning bird life up close. We also got to see a family of wallabies drinking from the wetlands. We were told if we were quiet we could possibly see a crocodile slide up behind a bird and take it. Luckily, the kids were having noisy moments this morning, so we were spared the carnage.
After morning tea, we decided to do a 2.5km walk around a billabong. The temperature was 42 degrees and there was not much shade but we all slogged on with visions of the lagoon pool in our heads. It was really tough going. Ray kept us entertained convincing the kids that he could actually understand all the bird calls and he struck up conversations with them. The kids loved it. Just when we thought we’d head back to the vans, we came across a lookout. The sign said 250 meters of strenuous climb so of course we thought we had better have a go at that too. It took some convincing to get the kids to agree to the climb but they were pretty good about it and sucked it up. The view was amazing from the top.
Finally, we thought we’d better take them home for a swim. The kids spent a well deserved afternoon in the pool before we all had a BBQ dinner. The kids were amazing today and showed such strength of character. Us adults found it tough going in the extreme heat and those amazing little bodies must have found it tougher. Thank goodness we were all well hydrated and carrying plenty of fresh water.
We are heading to Darwin tomorrow. We have decided to stay at least 7 days for repairs and recuperation. I have an Endota Spa voucher and a body that needs desperately to use it.
