Katherine is Kind – Day 49

We have all noticed the drop in humidity and the extra bite in the sun, as we travelled further towards Katherine. It is such a nice relief not to be sweating so much and feeling like we need to continually change our clothes.
As a change we thought we would go and take a look at the Cutta Cutta Caves which are about 30km away from Katherine. The caves are limestone and are about 60 billion years old. Each wet season they fill with water and the process continues throughout the ages. As we are here at the beginning of the wet season, we were lucky to be able to see the caves.
Many of the tourist attractions, roads and sightseeing events close over the wet season and some of the things and places we planned to see have closed. However, it is lovely to be travelling without thousands of other tourists. We get most places to ourselves.
Today we had a guided tour of the caves. Our guide was an Aboriginal male named Ethan. Ethan looked every bit the indigenous person until he started to speak. He had a lovely, very English accent and if you closed your eyes you could almost picture Mr Darcy (Pride and Prejudice). He was full of interesting information and the tour was well worth the $17.50 each.
We returned to the caravan park after stocking up with some fruit at Woolworths.
We are being careful with how much we buy because we know we will be going through the quarantine border into Western Australia in a day or so. We have heard that the inspections are very strict and some people have to empty absolutely everything out of their van while they inspect the van for fruit, vegetables, and insects. Apparently even the dreaded cane toads hitch rides under caravans so they are constantly on the lookout for them.
We made our way back to the caravans so the kids could ride their bikes. Caleb has finally built up the confidence to ride completely on his own. We are so proud of him and his perseverance and it’s great to see him so chuffed with himself.
We decided to leave Katherine Gorge until tomorrow. We want to hire canoes and paddle up the river. We need to see if Harry is old enough to do it too. If not they will do a river cruise and we will canoe. Fun!
