We were on the road this morning at 6:30am. Hannah is a dab hand at helping to get Harry ready and she is a stellar big sister. I bet Chris and Vicki were still lounging in bed! We decided to travel from Katherine to Lake Argyle in a day. Lake Argyle is the biggest man made lake in the Southern Hemisphere and is home to more than 70 islands. Most people stop along the way but we decided to give it a go. Before getting there we crossed the border into Western Australia. There is a strict quarantine control checkpoint and we knew that we couldn’t take any fruit, vegetables, honey or muesli with us. We had heard horror stories of people having to unload their whole caravans onto the side of the road for the inspectors to raise them on mounts to check for the dreaded cane toads and hidden contraband. We couldn’t understand that people (Grey Nomads in particular) would go to such lengths to hide food in the dark corners of their vans. Just eat it people and buy more later! Protect our environment that you are enjoying so much!
We were prepared that it could have been a couple of hours extra each to allow for this.
We arrived there having eaten all of our fruit and veggies and even threw out some of what we just couldn’t manage to eat. We found the inspectors very pleasant. They looked through the Waeco fridge in the back of the car and through the fridge and the cupboards. We appreciate that they need to be diligent to protect the produce industry.
We arrived shortly after at the Lake Argyle Resort. We had to put our clocks back 90 minutes as we were now in Western Australia. We are still 90 minutes behind Melbourne though.
The steep overnight fee of $49 was softened by the most amazing infinity pool. We weren’t disappointed and spent the afternoon lazing by the pool. We felt like movie stars with the incredible view as it was truly worth a million dollars. It’s a an absolute must see on the travelling agenda.
The view was absolutely incredible and well worth the 40km trip in before we reach Kununurra. Tomorrow morning Chris is going to do an aeroplane flight over the Lake and surrounds. We will wait for him in Kununurra and restock the fruit and veggies.
