After the morning hunting and gathering at Woolworths, we were met at our caravan by Nick, Rosie, and their 4 kids. They had offered to take us to a local favourite spot for the afternoon called Barred Creek. It involved a little 4WDing and wasn’t too far out of town.
We arrived at a beautiful spot where the river meets the sea. This is one of those favourite spots that you won’t find at the local Visitor Information Centre on a glossy brochure, but is where the locals hang out and is a place that is fun filled and absolutely accessible to everyone – if you know about it. We spent a lovely afternoon fishing, kayaking, shell collecting and swimming. We saw giant turtles swimming in the river and watched someone throw back a massive barramundi because they only fished for the sport of it. (!*!)
The kids explored the mangroves pretending to be Bear Grylls and were soon collecting hermit crabs. The fishermen in our group once again left empty handed but we took with us an afternoon of beautiful memories spent in the company of a generous and friendly family.
The kids did the car shuffle on the way home and after a quick shower, we returned to their home for another BBQ dinner. We met two other couples who Nick and Rosie had met since they had arrived in Broome and we spent a very pleasant evening together exchanging travel stories and getting valuable information for our next “leg”.
We were somewhat sad to say goodbye at the end of the evening and even though we are moving towards Perth, there is a strong possibility that we will return.Broome has certainly captured us with its rugged yet amazingly stunning landscape. There is simply no better way to describe it other than it being an affront to your visual senses. It has to be seen to be believed.
