I wandered down to the beach early this morning and took some more photos of the turtle tracks in and out of the water. The patterns in them are exquisite and really show the persistence of the turtles as they continuously make the same movement up and then back down the beach to lay their eggs. It’s truly an amazing experience to see. Caleb collected some shells and even Ray came back from his early morning walk with 2 pockets full. I’ve already got a huge stash of unique looking shells and we’ve heard that they get bigger and better a bit further down the coast.
We left the park and arrived in Port Hedland around lunchtime. We visited the port and watched huge ships come into the Harbour. Port Hedland is a mining town and the business of mining is evident everywhere. All services are geared to the miners and even the tourist information centre has closed down. (Note: At the current time, the Port Hedland Shire is attempting to lure tourists back to its region. They believe they have plenty to offer visitors and travellers. When we next travel we will certainly make our way there and see what is on offer in the Pilbara area. You can check out their website here: https://www.visitporthedland.com.au/
We made the decision to continue travelling through to Karratha rather than stop the night. On our way through the town we had to wait at a railway crossing for a train to pass carrying iron ore from the mines to the wharf. There were 123 carriages, we couldn’t believe our eyes. It certainly opened our eyes to the richness of our country and the level of exports that we are capable of.
Overall, today we drove close to 500km. We will stay here for a few days and do some day trips out to some interesting places.
