We headed off to Carnarvon this morning. It was quite overcast and we actually got a little rain. We haven’t seen rain for quite a while and it was a bit unusual to see it on the car windscreen. Made for a muddy mess too. It was still 26 degrees at 8:30 am though but just a little more comfortable than normal. A short 240kms later we arrived. We found a caravan park offering a night free if you stayed for two. It has a pool, playground, recreation room, and is neat and modern. We booked in.
Carnarvon is known for its bananas and fresh fruit and vegetables. We were given lots of information about the local plantations selling their wares and since we desperately needed food, we decided to drive around to the local farms before heading to the supermarket.
Many of the plantations sell their wares by the roadside with an honesty box system. We trawled the roads picking up fruit and vegetables at rock bottom prices.
At Bumbak’s we had to choose between a huge variety of homemade ice creams, many dipped in chocolate. This was particularly difficult. If I was at home with a regular sized freezer I would have bought a variety of them, because our caravan freezer is designated a zone for more important things than ice cream like actual food to feed us, we had to get the ice creams that we could eat straight away. Not such a bad thing! They were delicious.
Just down the road we came across an egg farm. Emerald Eggs with Humpty Dumpty sitting by the roadside. This was heaven for Ray as he is one of the country’s major consumers of eggs. The owner was a wealth of information and very pleasant. She gave us an impromptu tour of the factory, and even turned the egg sorting machinery on so that we could see how eggs are measured by weight, size and sorted depending on imperfections in their shells. That’s Caleb’s schooling taken care of for today. It was so interesting.
We bought a couple of dozen and left a couple of hours later, much wiser and marvelling at the huge eggs the owner had popped in for free.
We then ventured back to the caravan park for dinner. Yep… eggs!
