An interesting journey to Denham today, this town is the gateway to Monkey Mia and the famous dolphin feeding event. It is a tourist attraction out here in the middle of nowhere and I for one was interested to see if there was a degree of tourist infrastructure to go with the amount of hype about Monkey Mia that we had been hearing about on the road. We have heard many mixed reports on the dolphins from being a rip off to being an amazing experience. We’ve decided that we will have to go and decide for ourselves.
We kept the boys entertained on the journey with Simon and Garfunkle sung badly and loudly. Both Ray and I are culprits on both counts. We had a great time filling the hours on the trip.
While we were driving, Ray spotted something unusual on the road and actually did a u-turn with the van to check out what it was. Caleb and Ray thought it was hilarious to pick up the baby goanna road kill and chase me back to the car with it. Disgusting! Even though I didn’t touch it or it didn’t come close to touching me, the hand sanitzer got a good work out. Aaron just sniggered from the back seat.
On the way we stopped by Shell Beach. The whole beach is made up of trillions
of shells. Makes walking without your thongs slightly painful but really amazing to look at. The town of Denham has a couple of historical buildings that these shells have been used to make bricks out of. When we took an evening stroll around the town we noticed these shells used in numerous places where we might use Lilydale toppings or chip bark back in Melbourne. Ray even found some shells mixed in with the concrete holding a parking bollard in place.
I made Raelene’s carbonara for dinner which was a huge hit and oh so easy. I had forgotten just how good it is. It’s good to have some wholesome recipes up your sleeve for quick whip ups in the van that don’t always have to be cooked on the BBQ. This is one that is simple, quick and really filling.
