We made arrangements to meet Judy and Emma in Fremantle for a look around and a bite to eat before dropping Judy off at the airport for her flight back to Melbourne, Victoria.
We had a phone call from Shane and Kylie back home before we left and so we set up a Skype call. An unreliable internet connection only did one thing at a time well, either vision or sound. Shane decided to ring us at the same time so we had it all covered. Ryder promptly fell asleep on Shane but he was very chatty to begin with. Ray picked up the computer and gave them a guided tour of our camp through the camera onscreen but I’m not too sure how successful that was!
We hurried to shower and dress as we were running late but before we left we made it a priority to “do” the birthday cake, then we piled into the car and headed to “Freo”.
We collected Emma and Judy from the famous “Cappuccino Mile” where they had been waiting patiently for us (trying out the bevy of coffees on offer), caught up on “relevant gossip ” and then headed a few streets away to the wharf. We wandered along looking for somewhere to eat. I quite forgot that Emma has a severe food allergy which ruled out any kind of seafood. ( I instantly connect “no nuts” to her but forget about the seafood). Sorry Em! Anyway I’m sure she realised we weren’t being deliberately horrible by suggesting fish and chips for lunch and once the penny dropped, we decided to head for the Little Creatures Brewery. As we were deliberating we noticed a camera crew. They were shooting something with a Jeep and 4 actors. Everyone was running for the car. Not sure if it was a commercial or a series. We hung around in view of the camera shot. Perhaps we will make the cut!
Lunch was wood fired pizza and sensational company. We had the best table for people watching and we were able to see the horizontal rain and wind gusts bossing people around. Yes, it was raining in Perth, but still warm enough for shorts and singlets.
We bid farewell to Emma who was staying in Freo to meet up with a friend later in the afternoon. Emma flies out of Perth tomorrow for some bridal party duties and returns after we have moved on. We transferred Judy’s case to our car and feeling like something was definitely finishing, we headed towards the airport.
Once there, Judy checked in and the moment had arrived to say goodbye as well. I realised that I had looked forward to Judy and Emma’s arrival so very much that I didn’t consider what it would be like when they both left. I realised just how much I have cherished this time with them and how much their friendship means to me. We are a long way from home and everything that is “normal ” to us. They have been my little bit of home (if not normal).
The ride home from the airport was eventful with Caleb declaring that he was going to wee his pants if we didn’t stop at a toilet. We were on the freeway at the time. We offered him an empty bottle for the purpose but he wasn’t amused.
Home to dinner, bed and some wonderful relived memories of our time with Emma and Judy.
