Kalgoorlie Has Treats For All-Day 141

The night was warm but cooled down dramatically, so I was scrambling for the doona after a couple of hours. Ray and Caleb woke early (we were in bed by 8:30pm so this wasn’t surprising) and they went to explore the area. I lay under the doona relishing the exquisite silence. All I could hear were birds and insects, the wind and scratchings of branches against the caravan. It was relaxing and lulled me back to sleep. When they returned, Caleb had numerous stories of seeing a snake, a line of caterpillars and other wildlife. I suspect they also looked for gold as this area is where the first gold nugget was actually stumbled across. Literally.
As we were leaving Caleb spotted a wide open area and begged to stop and explore it. It was a large dried up lake which we named Caleb’s Easter Egg Lake because the ground resembled the pattern on Chocolate Easter Eggs. We had a little explore on and around the lake and then started our last leg to Kalgoorlie.
We arrived in town and headed straight for the tourist information centre. This was in the Town Hall. We got the details we wanted and then had a wander upstairs. The building is a grand structure reflecting the prosperity of Kalgoorlie during the gold rush days. There was no expense spared and the detail of the building was magnificent. Ray and I took a spin around the ballroom pretending to be part of the goldfield elite.
The statue of Paddy Hannan in the foyer recognizes his role in the building and establishment of Kalgoorlie. It’s quite a story and one that a visit to this area is a must to hear about.
We found our caravan park which had a special on (stay 4 nights, pay for 3). The lady in the office charged Caleb as an infant on top of that so that’s a great deal for us. The absolute bonus is that it has an inground pool also.
We set up our van, then headed straight for the pool. Today’s top was 41 degrees so the pool was very refreshing.
We will explore here for the next 4 days and there is certainly plenty to see and do!
