White Butts, Meatballs and Games – Day 146

No wonder this place is so popular. We drifted off to sleep to the sound of the waves on the beach. These beaches have won the coveted “Best in Australia” title for a while now. Even though there is no power, there are solar showers and toilets (flushing not drop). The rate is $9 per adult and $2 for kids a night. There is a campers kitchen with free barbecues and sinks for washing dishes. This place has it all, but no phone reception unless you climb to the lookout. You can drive along the beach to Esperance, making it a 22km journey instead of a 43km trip via the main road.
We woke at 5:50am, before the alarm, and as quietly as we could, hitched up and moved to the carpark. We had breakfast and waited. I climbed to the lookout to post yesterday’s blog and take in the sights.
By 9:30am, one caravan had vacated the park so we got our turn. We pulled out of the carpark, into the camping ground and set up, enjoying a relaxing morning. Caleb and I played some games and reminisced about when he was a baby while Ray…..talked to the neighbors. Even Caleb rolls his eyes and says “Dad’s talking again!”
After lunch we set off for Esperance, along the beach of course. This lead to some more white knuckle driving for me. I don’t know why, perhaps our previous experience being bogged, but driving on sand just gets to me.
We reached Esperance, had a look around and drove along the coast to check out the other bays. We found the nudie beach which was deserted so Ray quickly stripped down. Caleb promptly left the beach yelling to me that, “Dad’s butt is so white, like the sand!”
By the time we had grabbed some eggs, bread and marshmallows for Caleb’s daily hot chocolate, it was late.
We pulled into some recommended fishing spots that we may visit tomorrow and then returned to the van.
I had a go at making Aunty Tinie’s meatballs which Ray kindly said were just the same but we all knew they just didn’t make the cut. I’m sure I will get better and at least Caleb ate them and pinched one of Ray’s.
We settled in for a night of games. We played Noughts and Crosses, Draughts, Chinese Checkers and Ludo. Ray beat me at them all except Ludo. (He missed a crucial move which would have won him the game). It’s interesting to watch him play games of strategy. His eyes dart everywhere and his expression is very serious.
It was so quiet, the nothingness lulled us to sleep. By 9:20pm we were in bed listening to the waves.
