A new hobby
We decided to set the alarm because we seem to be sleeping in later and later and we are finding it hard to fulfil our tourist and sightseeing needs. Even Caleb is waking later. We set it for the reasonable hour of 7am.
Today we wanted to venture right into the city and “do” Rundle Mall. When we got there we parked in one of the high rise parking buildings. The CB aerial on the car kept catching on the roof of the parking building making a repetitive “drm, drm, dorm” as we went up 6 levels. Caleb got caught up in the rhythm of the noise, making the same sounds at the same time. After a while he said, ” I’m not doing it anymore, it’s driving me crazy”. The next few levels left to travel were a battle between him and his inner musician as he repeatedly told himself to stop it. Very cute! I wish I had caught it on video.
We walked outside the car park, taking note of the street landscape as we have been known to park and forget and then lose our bearings wandering unfamiliar streets. It makes finding your car very difficult.
We headed to Rundle Mall, probably most known as the “main” street of Adelaide. Perth has Hay Street, Melbourne has Bourke St and each gives pedestrians free reign of the mall. (Excluding the trams in Melbourne which are likely to mow you down if you get in their way for too long.)
Adelaide was pumping! There were people everywhere which enabled me to indulge in one of my greatest passions – people watching. I’m not sure what it is but I just love to look at people; what clothes they are wearing, expressions, shoes, bags, hair. Everything that makes us all so unique. There are a lot of “unique” people in Adelaide.
We stopped for a coffee and I must say I felt a little sorry for Ray and Caleb. Any conversation they tried to instigated was continually punctuated by me turning away to admire or gawk at another passerby.
I spotted Myer and went for a wander through. Ray and Caleb had some shopping to do and I wasn’t allowed to accompany them. I feel a birthday present coming up! I was delighted to be left alone in Myer and I soon discovered lots of sales racks with my favourite words “further markdowns”. I scored a couple of tops and a new hat. All too soon, the boys returned clutching a bag I wasn’t allowed to look in.
We spotted a coin dealer and climbed the stairs into a small showroom. We found the most interesting man who knew so much about valuable notes and coins. The information rolled off his lips like favourite old recipes. He hardly took a breath. Caleb was getting a bit antsy being kept waiting for so long. He was rewarded with the first ever coin in his collection. A 1953 penny. He was so impressed, even more so when the man put it in a special holder for him. We left with a very happy 10 year old!
Continuing to explore the mall, we came across Haigs chocolates. Even though it was 35 degrees, I still had to go inside. I’m sure Ray thought I wouldn’t buy any as it would melt, unfortunately, he was wrong. I couldn’t decide what to get so I bought a mixed bag. Caleb got offered some samples (not us, the paying adults) and the lady even gave him enough that she needed to put them all into a bag for him. What is it with this kid and getting free things everywhere we go?
I was on the lookout for a new pair of shorts. I have actually worn a hole through the back of my most favourite pair. I have already repaired them once but considering I wouldn’t be able to wear them without consistently checking my butt for torn fabric, it was time to move them on. This is quite a momentous occasion because as far as I can recall, this is the first piece of clothing I have ever owned that has been discarded because it has worn out. Usually it is because … well just because.
This is the wrong season to be buying shorts and so I was a bit disappointed.
When we returned to the car and paid the $26 parking fee, I was astonished to find we had been there for 6 hours.
See, time flies….
