Harndorf; The German Experience-Day 162

Today we were off to Handorf. A German inspired village, South of the Barossa Valley. We stopped along the way in the Adelaide Hills and took in the view. Even though it reached a top of 36 degrees today, it was overcast which actually made it quite bearable.
Handorf was a quaint tree lined street that went on and on. Each side offered an abundance of shops. These were unique of each other and each one held treasures not found at the others. We wandered through some delicious smelling delicatessens. Well, delicious to us but Caleb got very good at covering his nose after a couple of shops. German food has so many similarities to Dutch food and we saw so many familiar Dutch delicacies that we had eaten when we were in Holland a couple of years ago. Between the Metwurst (meat), the lavender shop, the tannery and leather shop and even the charity shop, Caleb suffered through a challenging smell-a-thon.
We noticed a lot of eateries with beautifully presented tables and settings. We resisted the urge to eat kransky and sauerkraut at the inn and returned to the car for our picnic lunch which we enjoyed at the little park in the middle of town.
I decided to scrounge through the charity shop and managed to score a pair of mens jeans for $5.00 that I could cut off at the knee for shorts. Score!
Caleb found a toy figure for 50c but when he tried to pay for it, the lady gave him back his money and got him to put it in his bank. What is it with this kid and getting free stuff? Seems I have a lot to learn from him, although I suspect it is his outgoing nature and cuteness that wins everyone over!
After lunch we decided to at least have coffee and cake. We stopped at “Haus” which is German for “house”.
I spotted the German apple cake and decided to try it. Ray helped a bit and we finally finished it. Totally scrumptious. I’m going to have a go at creating it (one day). Amazing!
Thoroughly bursting at the seams and with Caleb eager to get back to the van for his daily swim, we headed home.
Ray took Caleb to the pool and I prepared dinner. After tea, Caleb completed Mathletics for the day (he came first in live Mathletics and went to bed with a thoroughly puffed out chest) while I chatted to Judy in Melbourne, catching up on events at home in Melbourne.
