Changed Plans Lead To Berri-Day 166

We departed Adelaide this morning, heading for Broken Hill. Ray really wants to go there. My mum said it’s a lovely place and that’s good enough for him. We thought we would go there, then head to Mildura before the trek to Sydney.

We had just pulled out of the caravan park when Ray mentioned that we hadn’t heard from Russell and Noelene for a while. We first met Russell and Noelene at Lake Argyle up North. We have “run into them” periodically since then. This is one of the absolutely magical things about caravanning. As large and wide as Australia is you seem to keep bumping into people that you met somewhere along the line and have the opportunity to catch up and trade travelling stories. Technology makes it easier these days compared to when I did my first trip around Australia when I was 9 years old with my parents and mobile phones, internet and social media were still not invented. (Can you imagine a time?) Anyway, we text Noelene and she said they were at a lovely spot in Berri, in a free camp by the Murray River. It was quite hot so they were spending the day getting in and out of the river.

It sounded too good! A quick change of plans as we consulted the map and we told them we would be there soon!
It’s this kind of thing that is so wonderful about travelling. We can do anything we want and go wherever we want. Who gets to do that? (Bums and gypsies excepted of course).
We stopped for lunch at Waikerie and watched the ferry transport cars to and fro, across the river. It was a lovely spot and where I decided I would like to spend a week on a houseboat. I’m sure Ray nearly had kittens when he thought I meant during this trip. I assured him it could wait for another time.

We arrived in Berri after lunch and it was wonderful to see Russell and Noelene again. We set up, grabbed our bathers and spent the remainder of the day (and early evening) sitting by the river catching up.

Ray and Caleb discovered a Tarzan rope attached to a tree and put it to good use.
As we finished dinner Ray discovered it was still 37 degrees and not a breath of moving air. Perhaps a sleepless night? Luckily none of us have to work tomorrow.
