The farmers market was being set up, and the sounds of which were carrying across the river. This eventuated in waking us up but I kept dozing on and off, snug and warm under the doona. It definitely wasn’t as warm here in Mildura as I would have liked. Ray and Caleb wouldn’t rest until I was fully awake and upright and they kept mentioning the word “market ” and how much I might like to go there and how they hoped I wouldn’t miss it, sleeping in as late as I was.
Eventually, we were good to go (after waiting for them to get ready). The day was overcast and on the cold side although a top of 27 degrees was predicted, but as we realised- we were in Victoria! (It was to be expected).
The market was a true farmers market with homemade goodies and farm produce. The variety was endless.
We came across some homemade bread which reminded me of Saturdays at my Grandmas house when I was a young girl. I watched her making wholemeal bread and we even had to walk up to the local shops to buy the fresh yeast from the Health Food store.
I bought a loaf of sourdough with fruit that both Caleb and I thought was nice. Of course he scored a piece from the stallholder to take away with him too, for free.
Ray and I grabbed a coffee and this gave Caleb the chance to play with some kids on the playground. We are conscious that he doesn’t get much of an opportunity to mix with kids on the road so weekends in parks work out pretty well.
While I enjoyed my coffee, I felt like some fruit bread. Luckily, my gorgeous new yellow Swiss Army knife that Ray and Caleb gave me for my recent birthday came in very handy. I was able to cut a piece and enjoy it. It’s the gift that just keeps on giving!
We watched Caleb push a little girl on the swing because she didn’t know how to get herself started with the swinging motion. He then waited patiently for his turn. Caleb loves the swing. We have had times when he has actually swung for about 30 minutes on his own. It’s like he zones out with the motion of the “to and fro”ing. Not sure what is going through his mind when this happens.
After the market we took a drive to Wentworth because Ray wanted to visit the old jail. We started the visit looking in the room of antiques which is actually the old warden’s office. Just as we were about to go in and pay, Ray decided he needed to go to the toilet. Now, if there is one thing we have learnt on this trip, it’s that if someone needs to go to the toilet, everyone should really go. It’s often an effort to find a public toilet and there is nothing more annoying than needing to go 15 minutes after leaving one.
So, we all went with him to the park across the road.
When we were adequately “emptied” we spotted a “pioneer” museum a little way down the road and we wandered over.
We instantly noticed a sign that said “if the attendant is sleeping, please ring the bell”. The attendant was wide awake and collected our entrance fee for us and we moved into the museum. We saw some interesting things and watched a DVD about the floods of the area in the early 1900’s.
When we left we totally bypassed the Wentworth jail which was why we went there in the first place. This kind of segway commonly happens while we are travelling. We often notice that the whole purpose for our daily outing is forgotten amongst the rabbit hole of exploration. It’s an exciting part of the nomadic life.
We took a drive to the river junction. This is where the Murray River and Darling Rivers meet and the one resulting river becomes the Murray Darling. The Murray is quite dark and muddy water and the Darling is much clearer. Where they meet there is a clear colour distinction until the water mixes and then it resembles a chocolate milkshake. Interesting.
We toured the paddle steamer Ruby” which has been lovingly restored by a band of enthusiastic volunteers. We had a go at steering her while Ray asked the volunteer guide about the possibility of doing a “Titanic” on the bow of the boat. Unfortunately, it wasn’t allowed. As usual, this didn’t deter Ray who was trying to get a definition on ” not allowed” from the guide as I walked away.
We had to visit Kmart on the way home as I had accidentally thrown out two of Caleb’s Star Wars figures with the rubbish, and I had promised to replace them. I was also feeling the need for chocolate and I was totally seduced by a bag of mixed cream chocolates. By the time we got back to the van, most of the bag was gone (I accept the blame ).
