After the barking dogs had quietened down for the night we actually got quite a peaceful sleep. That is probably the best thing about not staying in conventional caravan parks. You get less amenities and services, but it is just so much more peaceful.
We packed up and headed to the Tourist Information Centre. It was closed yesterday and we were hoping to get a book of the area, or even handier, of this part of New South Wales.
The girl there was rather pleasant and we gathered some information before leaving. There was a shearing museum in town that we hadn’t noticed on our way in yesterday so we went past there. We had missed the shearing demonstration which was a pity. Caleb would have enjoyed that. Perhaps we will get to see a sheep being shorn at the Sydney Easter Show which was on at the same time that we were planning to be around the Sydney area.
Back on the road, we arrived in Griffith after lunch. We took a look around town then made our way to a sign that said “lookout”. We wished we weren’t in our usual uniform of thongs as the track was rocky, but we thought we’d give it a go anyway. (Ray is actually on his second pair of things having totally worn out his first pair). About 800 metres into the walk we realised we weren’t actually going anywhere and had actually snaked around two giant water tanks. We headed back then checked the map in the tourist book. This lookout was marked but we were stumped as to where it was. We noticed that a little further up the road was another lookout and something marked on the map as “Hermit’s Cave”. When we got there and read the signs we discovered that in the 1920’s and for another 32 years, a man called Valeri Ricetti lived like a hermit in the rocky terrain overlooking Griffith. We climbed amongst the rocks and saw all of the separate places that he had created, including walls made of shale and a garden area that was now overgrown with cactus. Cursing our thongs yet again, Caleb led us along rocky paths and probably would have led us another couple of kilometres back to town if Ray hadn’t intervened and pointed out the correct paths to take.
While we were looking at the hermit’s view we noted a huge green grassed area below us with a playground. Ray thought it might be good to visit there. There were a lot if people out and about walking, jogging and exercising. We had a go on the exercise equipment. No need for a gym membership in Griffith! The park really was good, especially the beach volleyball set up to use. We grabbed the Vortex out of the back of the car and had a great time throwing it over the net while a gentleman sat quietly watching it travel to and fro. I think he was mesmerised!
Our tummies were rumbling and it was close to 6:30pm when we left. Caleb just had to have a swim in the pool while I made dinner and we each fell into bed exhausted.
