Canberra’s Weather Drives Us Away-Day 177

Thunder, lightening and pelting rain kept us awake throughout the night. Caleb had a tummy ache and we suspected it might have been the pie he ate yesterday as Ray reported some “trouble ” with his tummy too. Caleb requested that “Doctor Dad ” assist him so Ray took control and soon we were ok to head to Questacon. Caleb had been so excited about coming here and we thought it might be a good learning experience for us all.
We weren’t disappointed and spent the next few hours exploring the madness of science. A whole day could easily be spent exploring in here and learning about the maths behind many fun activities.
My cousin, Melanie lives in Canberra and after some Facebook contact and hurried text messages we had worked out that she would also be at Questron with visiting friends at the same time – what a coincidence! I met her in the cafe for a very quick hello and hug and it was really great to see her. I have fond memories of playing Lego for hours and hours with Melanie and my brother, Chris when we were kids. It seems like yesterday!
We knew we had to return to our campground, hook up the van and head out to Batemans Bay. Originally, we had planned to extend our stay but the weather and the dire need to do a couple of loads of washing was pushing us out of town.
Batemans Bay was only around 140km away and as soon as we started driving, we noticed the scenery change. We encountered a hill so steep that we tried to rock backwards and forwards in our seats to try to help the car and van to get up it. Any slower and we would have been going backwards! When we reached the top we realised that going over a mountain meant that on the other side it was all downhill. Ray negotiated the extremely curvy and steep road very well as he used his driving skill to pull into the slow vehicle lanes, almost stopping as he let everyone else past on numerous occasions. It took a lot of patience and knowing the capabilities of the car and van to do this successfully. What a talented man! (I was just glad it was him and not me).
Batemans Bay is a lovely coastal town and our park was just across the road from the beach. Ray and Caleb went to the supermarket with a list and instructions. Absolutely no stopping for coffee, donuts, sausages being sold for fundraising or deviations from the list. I spoke from experience and put Caleb in charge of the situation. I had 2 loads of washing to do and with the late hour that we had arrived, they would need to go in the dryer. (A total of $16).
Caleb and Ray returned and Caleb informed me that “Dad was really good and didn’t even stop for coffee”. He had a swim in the pool which surprised us as the water was absolutely freezing. He swam laps up and down the pool to warm up. Caleb is such a fish!
