We had most of the day to continue sightseeing before we had to have Corrie back at the airport for her 6pm flight to Melbourne, Victoria.
We started at the Paddy’s Market in Parramatta. This market is advertised on TV, has free parking and entry and was totally amazing in size and variety. There were literally over a thousand stall holders ranging from trash and treasure to fresh food. We couldn’t believe the prices. One woman was selling her entire shoe collection which gave mine serious competition. There were tables and tables of clothes piled high to be sorted through and then prices haggled with a man standing on the ” back of a truck”. Clothes were flying everywhere.
Over in the other shed, there were hundreds of stalls of fresh food. Everything from fresh food to nuts, preserves, spices, curries and seafood. The smells were strong and numerous and Caleb was very blatant with his thoughts walking along holding his nose and loudly announcing that he was going to be sick. This enabled us to obtain a clear pathway through the crowd as people worried about being splattered with vomit juice. It worked quite well actually. We saw boxes of tomatoes being sold for $1. Yes $1 for the whole box! We couldn’t believe our eyes. Most people had trolleys and were buying stock in huge quantities. We were sure that there must have been quite a few restaurant owners there. We bought some bananas ($1.50kg), some peaches ($1.50kg), some mixed nuts ($10.00kg), nougat ($3.00 for 6 pieces).
We headed to Bondi after the market, but couldn’t resist dropping by Tasman St, home of one of the “The Block” locations and taking photos of the finished properties from the reality TV show. They look so much smaller in real life but they are really close to iconic Bondi Beach so we could understand the prices that they got at auction.
We made out way to an Italian restaurant opposite the beach. The whole area was really pumping and was full of very young people, many of whom were backpackers. We ordered lunch and sat to watch the world go by.
A visit to the beach was required before we could head for the airport. We decided that Bondi Beach was the most populated beach we had seen so far on our trip. Tourists come from far and wide to Australia to visit Bondi and its beach. I think that part of the attraction is because it is so integrated with the residential and commercial areas surrounding it, it is a relatively safe beach with its dedicated Surf Lifesaving Team patrolling and it has a very nice outlook.
Photos taken, we headed for the airport. Saying farewell to Corrie was sad and knowing that the next time we saw her we would need to be in Holland, we knew it wouldn’t be for quite a while.
