Time for some reminiscing.
45 years ago, Ray as a young boy drove from Melbourne to Toowoomba with his parents and two of his (7) siblings. They were going to visit his eldest sister and her minister husband. Ray remembered the church and a nearby park with a footbridge where he was bitten by a bullant. Today’s mission was to see if we could find the church and bridge.
We set out knowing we had a 500km return trip in front of us, but also plenty of time to complete it in.
We stopped at a roadside fruiterer to stock up on our fruit and veg for the week and the boys enjoyed a pie for lunch. The woman who owned the cafe shared some tips about travelling in far North Queensland so we will be sure to visit some of the places she recommended.
Toowoomba is a quite a large city, originally settled for its agricultural benefits and now absolutely thriving. It seemed to pop up from nowhere as we travelled up the mountain range and then reached the top.
We searched for the church and park and then with the help of a phone call to Ray’s sister who now lives in Perth, we were able to locate all the relevant landmarks. We had a play in the park and Ray walked along the boardwalk that he wasn’t allowed to all those years ago in case he fell in, and then we began the journey back, passing Tabletop Mountain in the distance.
We pumped up the music and took turns choosing songs to belt out all the way back.
A good day of rekindled memories for Ray and beautiful scenic road tripping for Caleb and I.
