We wanted to get an idea of what there was to do around Airlie Beach and where we would be staying the following week etc., in preparation for our guests who would be arriving from Melbourne.
Airlie Beach impressed us instantly. The Whitsundays are known for their white sand and aqua water and we weren’t disappointed. The sun came out in bursts, between fluffy white clouds. Caleb spotted a foreshore market so we wandered along looking at the local art and street performers. A sand sculptor was in the middle of creating an impressive looking dragon curled up on the sand. It had fire coming from two pots which were its nostrils. We were very impressed. We had coffee and scones and then visited the information centre for ideas on tours and things to do.
The helpful (young) lady pointed out a nice beach nearby in case our visitors wanted to sun bake while they were here. We thought we would take a look. We found a shipwreck washed up on the shore which provided some entertainment for Caleb while I wandered along the beach picking up shells. I got caught by a few small waves and although Ray didn’t seem to think so, the water was really quite cold. We were told it was 21 degrees but it was still not warm enough for me.
We checked out some caravan parks and chose one which is within walking distance to Airlie Beach along a boardwalk by the beach. Great for exercising or just a leisurely walk. The Main Street of Airlie Beach is in the middle of an upgrade, affecting the foot traffic to the shops. We spoke to one shop owner who said the works started in September last year and no end date had been given. It’s a bit of a shame for the holiday makers but all stores are still trading as usual.
By the time we had finished exploring it was well past 2:30pm and we had missed lunch. Caleb was beside himself. I had neglected to pack a picnic so we returned to the van for something to eat. Shortly after, it started to rain and I encouraged the clouds to shake it all out, every drop, so that there is nothing left up there to rain on us next week. Futile I know, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyway.
