When in Cairns it is imperative that you do the major touristy thing which is going to Kuranda via the old railway train and returning on the sky rail. We headed off this morning, handed over $265 for the experience and had a marvellous day.
The train meanders through the rainforest, taking nearly two hours to reach Kuranda, a rainforest village well known for its markets and local artisan crafts.
The train ride gave us amazing views of the valley and beyond to the ocean. At some stages there was a sheer drop on one side and a wall of rock on the other. The train was similar to our Puffing Billy, that meanders through the Dandenongs in Victoria, but it was diesel powered.
At Kuranda we wandered around the markets marvelling at the clever locals and all the different crafts they made. The main customer here are overseas tourists and so the prices reflected this. I saw a couple of lovely necklaces I would have liked to buy but at over $70 each I left them there. We didn’t get time to see all of the markets so we promised ourselves to come back in the car another day.
We had lunch and an icecream, then made our way to the Skyrail. Caleb insisted that he didn’t want to go in it anymore but once we told him it was the Skyrail or a 3 day walk, he soon hopped on.
The views were spectacular and we stopped at the two stations on the way back to wander around the rainforest and see the Barron Falls from viewing points. It really is a very beautiful part of Queensland.
We got our transfer bus back to our car at the station then agreeing that we were all absolutely exhausted, made our way home.
Wednesday nights are sausage sizzle night around the pool in the caravan park. We joined the nomads for a wine and sausage, enjoying their banter and sharing our adventures of the day.
