It was tempting to do nothing today after our huge day yesterday but we packed a picnic and took off anyway.
We planned to explore the beaches between Cairns and Palm Cove. Each was attached to a lovely little village, with houses and a few shops overlooking the beach. When we reached Palm Cove the difference in the houses were obvious. They were catering for the elite holiday maker and even the main road that ran along the foreshore was cobbled. It looked like a lovely holiday spot with plenty of accommodation to choose from. We had our picnic and Ray went to the foot shower to wash his fingers. He pressed the button to turn the lower tap on but the top tap activated instead and he ended up with a very wet tshirt. Caleb and I laughed a lot. It was warm enough that it didn’t take long for it to dry.

We decided to head further, up to Port Douglas, to see how it differed from Palm Cove. Along the way we stopped to watch some hang gliders and parasailers leaping from a roadside cliff. They just seemed to step off into nothing and away they went. Ray and I agreed that it was not something we were keen to try.

We knew Port Douglas was a popular tourist destination and had heard good reports over the years from friends who had visited there. We noticed a new level of luxury in the houses and could almost smell the dollars! The streets had a good mix of discount stores and some with beautiful homewares and clothes. There was an amazing amount of eateries, all very refined looking and if we hadn’t just had lunch, we would have joined the relaxed looking tourists for a bite. Port Douglas is very tropical, lush and green and we can see the appeal to tourists. We will return here on Sunday for the famous markets on the foreshore with Uncle Tony and Aunty Barbara.
We are looking forward to seeing the calibre of crafts from this area.
