Squeezing Every Bit out of Cairns City-Day 269

A lazy Saturday called for more exploring of Cairns.

Before we left though, we were once again called to the morning tea gathering at 10:30am. This time the treat on offer was homemade damper, made by Duncan, now I was really going to look bad! We sat in the sunshine and talked for a while then we took off for Cairns City. We wandered around The Pier precinct then up to Rusty’s market. The market is mainly fresh fruit and vegetables and it was in abundance. Tropical North Queensland doesn’t disappoint when it comes to tasty, fresh fruit and veggies. We came across a stand selling sugar cane juice and we watched how the sugar cane was fed through a press and all the juice squeezed out. This added with a scoop of ice and you had a nice cool drink. We just had to try it and found that the taste was a bit like a sweet lemon sorbet, quite nice.
We wandered around taking in all of the sights and sounds of the bustling markets.
We made it back to the park in time to score an invitation to 5 o’clock drinkies. It’s BYO drinks and chairs. Nibbles have been boycotted this year as they detracted from the BBQ duties of the men in past years. (This meant that everyone would overindulge on savouries and there would be no need to fire up the BBQ).
Everyone shared their stories from the day and when darkness fell, retreated to their vans to retire for the night.
My cousin Linda has flown up from Melbourne and is staying in Aunty Barbara and Uncle Tony’s annexe. She paid us a visit after dinner and we talked until the wee hours. She was nervous about returning to the van where she was sure her mum and dad would have their arms folded and be tapping their toes in anticipation of her late arrival back. Linda is one of my older cousins so this thought was quite amusing. We wished her luck and looked forward to finding out tomorrow.
