Poor Ray is “Sign Blind” -Day 274

It’s official! My husband can’t read signs, he actually is “sign blind”.

My brother and his family who we travelled with earlier in our trip would be relieved as they secretly already suspected this. The suspicion came from Ray’s continual ignorance of signs, rendering him a complete rule breaker. This happened in a variety of situations and now I’m made to feel and act like the sign police, pointing out where he can and cannot go, and when.
This afternoon we went to Lake Barron where the hydro electric facility is located. The views over the river are lovely. White water rafting is held on this river and when required, extra water is let out of the dam to accommodate the sport. I wondered at the conversation that would take place to organise this. Something like, “Yeah Gidday mate. I have a group booked in today at 10. Can you open the gates a little and let some water out, thanks. They are a young group so make it a biggie, lets give them the ride of their lives!” Hmmm…
Driving across the top of the dam wall is for authorised vehicles only ( as the sign clearly stated) but our car was entering and had no intention of stopping. Initially, I thought Ray was testing me waiting to see how far he could get before I pointed out we weren’t allowed to be there. I didn’t say anything as I usually would and we just kept going.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore and politely asked Ray if he had read the signs about “no unauthorized vehicles”. This surprised him. “What sign?”
I was referring to the TWO signs, one on either side of the road, at the boomgate as we proceeded across the bridge.
Ray reversed the car, noticing the signs as he did so. I decided that my role as navigator was seriously underestimated and that from now on I won’t be particular about pointing it out. He obviously needs my skills at reading to safely navigate our way around the top end!

I shiver with horror imagining the roads and river crossings that Ray may get us into infested with crocodiles and beasts because he has failed to read signs or check his environment properly. We have already suffered through a car bogging that will enable me to share many details of for many years to come. I believe it’s called “getting a lot of mileage out of that one!” Denham Swallows the Car-Day 77
