We were disappointed campers this morning when we turned up at the Spy Museum right on time to find it closed! The signs (and Google) indicated that it should be open so after knocking and getting no response, we turned dejectedly away. We have to pass back through this way, so we will try again another day.
We travelled on the highest road in Queenslsnd to the highest town, Ravenshoe. We kept moving, having a lot of kilometres to cover today and I think Ray was a bit concerned that a place with “shoe” in its name could offer something more attractive to me than a public toilet and a coffee.
It was another wet morning and we couldn’t even point out the wind turbines that we passed to Caleb because we couldn’t see them! We noticed the signs for the Millstream falls, Australia’s widest falls, so we stopped for morning tea. A short walk took us to the top of the falls and a lookout. This area was used by the army during the Second World War and there is still evidence of bunkers along the Heritage Trail. The rain was falling harder so we skipped the trail and retreated to the covered picnic tables instead for a hot coffee.
The drive along the Savannah Way is long with small communities dotted every so often. It reminds me a lot of driving in Western Australia where you cover long distances, thankful for the music keeping you company. (Or keeping the driver company while you Nanny nap!)
We stopped for the night at Mount Pleasant. A basic camp spot with open air showers. (Now, that was interesting!) Leaving the caravan attached to the car for a quick escape in the morning, we walked down the Main Street for a look see.
At the cafe we noticed a sign we couldn’t ignore. “Burgers Like They Used To Be Before They Stuffed Them Up”. It beat the “Best Hamburgers in Far North Queensland” sign in the window next door, so we decided we’d have to skip our planned dinner and order a couple of these. They were massive as we’d hoped for $ 12.80 each, so Caleb and I shared one. They were delicious and tasted just like hamburgers used to (before they stuffed them up!)
