Peacocks Play With Eagles-Day 298

A visit to the tourist information centre had us booked in to do a mine tour tomorrow. We are looking forward to the 2.5 hour learning experience but not the 9am start.

We took a trip out to Lake Moondara about 15km from the main town. The water level was low and as we had been told, the wet season wasn’t very wet so it’s at an all time low.

Walking across the spillway gave us a terrific view of both sides of the lake and Caleb spotted a coloured structure through the trees that could only be a playground. That just had to be our next destination!

We drove around the lake to the playground and while Caleb played, Ray and I sat and watched the peacocks strutting around. Some people picnicking were throwing food to them which caused a bit of a ruckus with the overhead eagles. The eagles were circling above and this was quite a spectacle as there were plenty of them. They kept swooping down to steal the food off the peacocks, actually getting it right out of their mouths. We saw one peacock in particular, jump at least a metre off the ground in an attempt to foil the hawk as it swooped. Nature at its best.

Hunger made us return to the van, along with the cool breeze that started blowing as the sun was retreating. Don’t let anyone tell you that the Australian Outback is hot all of the time!
