Ray was up early, early, early and wandered down to the Hot Springs with his cup of coffee. He got some great photos of the morning steam rising off the creek and the sun shining through the trees. Getting to be quite the photographer, Ray!
44km away was our destination for the day. Caleb couldn’t believe that it was so close and that we didn’t have hours and hours to travel.
We passed the wind farm which houses 20 wind turbines and powers 3500 homes. They make very imposing figures on the landscape.
We arrived in Ravenshoe at morning tea time. It is pronounced Ravens-hoe but of course I immediately decided Raven-shoe was much more fitting. We wandered the street, Ray looking for a coffee shop, me looking for the shoe shop that just had to be here!
I lucked out on the shoe shop and seriously wondered at the lack of creativity in this town that doesn’t have a shoe shop when “shoe” is in its name! What a gold mine it could be. People would come from miles around to buy shoes from the Ravenshoe Shoe Shop. Better yet, a raven (bird) would be the logo and black (raven) shoes a particular specialty. I managed to plan and voice the whole concept over a cup of tea in the cafe that Ray found. I’m sure my husband sometimes thinks I am a little potty!
We decided to keep driving another 40km or so to the town of Atherton, where incidentally, there are two shoe shops!
We thought this would be a good base to explore the area a little. We found a lovely quiet caravan park with full phone reception and set about catching up after having no phone, TV or radio reception for two days. It is amazing how much you miss when you are out of the satellite loop.
