The City of Gold Delivers Pizza-Day 304

Charters Towers was once the second largest city in Queensland, a bustling metropolis which boasted 65 hotels and kind of the very first regional stock exchanges in Australia. Why?

In 1871 a young Aboriginal horse boy picked up a piece of gold accidentally and a gold rush soon ensued.

Many of the buildings in the town are heritage listed and even if the businesses inside them have changed, the old time feel of the buildings haven’t.

We spent a lazy Saturday morning reading. washing and I also finally mopped the caravan floor. I’ve been “going to do it” for quite a while now. When I say “mopped” I mean got down on my hands and knees with a bucket of water and a cloth and washed it old-fashioned style. I was adamant that I wasn’t going to lug a mop around Australia with me and since the actual area of the caravan floor is minimal, I thought it wouldn’t take much to mop it. It didn’t take much to do it, it just took a lot to actually start it. Like most things though I suppose.

By the time we waited for the floor to dry, had lunch and got moving, it was 3:30pm and there wasn’t much time left for exploring of any nature. We made a quick stop at the Visitor Information Centre, got some information on the area and took a walk down the Main Street. There were so many interesting shops but they were all closed.
We had to come back!

Luckily the supermarket was open as I had developed a serious chocolate craving that could only be cured by a bag of bullets and a chocolate bar. Mmmmm…

We returned to the caravan park where the owners cooked wood fired pizzas for everyone which were homemade, from scratch. Caleb declared his tummy a pizza free zone and requested cheese toasties. Now that doesn’t happen very often.
