March 4th – The “Best of Everything” in Echuca

The Captain demanded a walk to continue his knee rehabilitation so we took the scenic River Walk while Ray went to the “Best Holden Museum in Australia”. The walk was picturesque and as the name promised, it went along the river, behind the shops and cafes.

We made it to the end of the river walk and sat on a bench to wait for a phone call from Ray to tell us that he was done with his Holden history lesson. We watched a lady approach us, Henry sure he was going to get a pat so he wandered over to her, tail wagging. She was holding out a parcel in her hand and explaining as she did so.

” Does your dog like bacon? The cafe put much too much bacon on my sandwich. I was taking it home for later but I’d much prefer to give it to him if he’s allowed to have it.” She handed over the parcel, and Henry’s nose could instantly detect what was wrapped up in her hand. He sat instantly. She was impressed. I explained that bacon and steak were Henry’s kryptonite and he would dearly love to relieve her of her bounty. Then it occurred to me. This was another thing that Henry had scored for free. He had literally taken the bacon out of this lovely lady’s mouth! What a dog!

We met up with Ray and over a coffee he told us about his visit to the museum (disappointed because they didn’t have a Sandman but they did have the last Holden ute ever produced). Yep…I tried to look interested but was waiting for a break in the monologue and photo sharing so that I could tell Ray about the free bacon.

On the way back to the van we passed “The Best Beer Shed in Australia” and Ray decided that he also needed a visit there.

He returned hours later with numerous photos and stories of the most amazing items that the owner had in his collection that he lovingly shared with the community (for a fee) and the stories that he told to go with each one. Ray declared it the “absolute best beer shed in Australia” – (the only one he has visited so far).

The Captain and I were in need of a rest for the afternoon (recuperation after our walk) so Ray dropped us off at the van. Henry and I spent the afternoon doing our stretches, regretting not bringing my pilates mat because the grass was scratchy and the hard concrete, well… hard concrete.
