We needed to return to Fremantle today. We had 3 things on our list. Firstly, we needed to visit the Fremantle jail. This jail is the oldest structure in the Southern Hemisphere which was built by convicts and only stopped being used as a prison in 1991. It was notorious for the bad treatment of the prisoners in modern times and yet when it was built in 1850 it was the most modern building in the state and quite the pride of Western Australia. Our tour guide elected all the kids on the tour as prisoners and kept them near her up the front, engaging them, asking them questions and giving them tasks to do. This meant that the rest of us could enjoy the tour too. We decided that she must have been an ex-teacher, she was so good at it. She lined the kids up and explained how prisoners would have been processed by being strip searched and forced to bend forward. There were some horrified faces, Caleb’s included, when she told the kids to line up. Priceless. I think that alone will be enough to keep Caleb on the straight and narrow for a while to come.
A very interesting tour, well worth seeing if you are in town.
The second task we needed to complete was to visit the “Good Sammy’s ” ( opportunity shop) and stock up on books. I didn’t find a book (I didn’t actually look) but I got a seriously nice Wayne by Wayne Cooper dress. It was marked at $15:00 but wouldn’t you know it, all clothes were 50% off. Nice!
Aaron got a book but Caleb was disappointed that there were no “fully articulated” figures for him to buy. We discovered that the whole corner of the shopping precinct was full of op shops. Good Sammy’s, Salvos, Vinnies, Anglicare. We wandered from one to the other spotting some interesting garments and some serious designer bargains which I had to leave there due to space restrictions. I already have the biggest clothing space in the van and unless everyone else is going to spend portions of the holiday naked, I’m pretty much at maximum now.
Finally we needed to visit a small bottle shop that we had previously bought a couple of clean skins from. The owner recommended them, they were from the Margaret River region, and she was right. We knew we couldn’t leave Fremantle until we had some more in our tender loving care.
A productive day all in all.
